Member Feature: Catching up with Sean Kramer, MSHS, PA-C

Sean Kramer 2

OAPA celebrates its members from across the state and in all areas of practice. This month we are featuring Sean Kramer, MSHS, PA-C, PA Program Director and Clinical Associate Professor at Lake Erie College.

Here's what Sean's nominator for the member feature had to say:

"Sean represents the values that we hold in high regard in the PA profession. He is energetic, a true visionary and advocates for all Ohio students and PAs. He is a PA Director for one of Ohio's premier PA programs and works as an emergency medicine PA. He is a site reviewer for ARC-PA and works with PAEA developing curriculum and presenting skills for new faculty. He has been a speaker at OAPA conferences and serves on the diversity committee. He has worked with University Hospitals to establish transition to practice programs for PAs working in critical care and advocates for employment parity with NPs in the system. Sean volunteers with the Lake County Free Clinic and precepts students to provide pre-clinical experiences. He has also created an advanced clinical skills certification for students interested in acute care."

We caught up with Sean to ask him a few question about his his career:

Why do you love being a PA?
I love being a PA. I love that I get to take care of our community and also prepare the future of medicine. As an emergency medicine PA, I often find people at some of their most challenging moments. With the skills I have learned and have been entrusted with, I am often able to help make their lives better. As a PA educator, I especially appreciate the energy and passion from our students. Being there from start to finish, it is an honor to watch them develop into incredible PAs!

What do you wish you knew about being a PA when you were in PA school?
It is a little hard to reflect what I was thinking other than just surviving through PA school! I think it would be valuable to know how small the PA community is in some ways. It seems like many people know or are familiar with other PAs in the region. I wish I realized how important it was to network and meet others, because that often opens up opportunities.

Why are you an OAPA member?
First, I benefit from everything OAPA does. OAPA is the only Ohio state organization for PAs which helps in modernizing and supporting our profession to work at the top of our license. Second, it is a great organization.  OAPA holds incredible conferences, helps with professional development, and provides an important community among PAs.

How do you like to spend your time when you aren't working?
I love spending time with my family, whether it is going to my children's baseball, dance, or pageant events cheering them on or going on vacations, preferably to the beach. I also spend time on a saltwater reef tank.  Saltwater fish and coral are beautiful; it can be mesmerizing how different and peaceful underwater life can be.
